Canon to Expand into Printer Market

May 18, 2007

Executives of the Japanese photo camera manufacturer Canon announced today a possible takeover bid for the printer division of the US Kodak company. Prensa Latina reported this news from Tokyo yesterday.

Announcing the action intended to keep its leadership in the market, Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai appeared triumphant before the press, speaking on the future of the company’s operations.

Canon will not renounce its world leadership in the camera and multifunction printer areas without a fight, while the sector competitiveness is ever more fierce, he said.

Mitarai said Canon’s goals include reaching No. 1 standing in all of its market segments over the next few years, including office imaging products, computer peripherals, business information products, optical products as well as cameras.

He noted Canon reached $35 billion in worldwide sales in 2006 and sports a strong balance sheet.
