ZINK Imaging announces intent to purchase Konica Minolta Manufacturing Facility

North Carolina facility to serve as manufacturing hub for ZINKTM zero inkTM paper

ZINK Imaging, the company behind the recently-unveiled zero inkTM digital printing technology, today announced its intent to purchase a state of the art manufacturing facility in Whitsett, North Carolina from Konica Minolta Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. (KMMU). This plant will manufacture ZINKTM Paper which will be used in ZINKTM-enabled printers.

The patented ZINKTM Paper is an advanced composite material with dye crystals embedded inside and a protective polymer overcoat layer outside. Before printing, the embedded dye crystals are clear, so ZINKTM Paper looks like regular white photo paper. A ZINKTM-enabled printer uses heat to activate and colorize these dye crystals. The printing process is now radically simple. Just add paper and press “print”. The result is high quality, long-lasting, durable and affordable images.

“We are quite pleased to be able to extend our manufacturing operations beyond our headquarters in Massachusetts to the Konica Minolta facility in North Carolina,” said Wendy Caswell, President & CEO of ZINK Imaging. “The Konica Minolta manufacturing site is synergistic with our existing operations which made the decision to purchase the facility a natural one.”

KMMU is a coating and chemical mix facility originally built in 1989 for production of a variety of imaging products and is located in Whitsett, North Carolina. ZINK Imaging will hire and leverage the expertise of the employees of the KMMU site to assist in the manufacturing of ZINKTM Paper.
