Xerox launches colour for price of mono

Oct 2, 2007

Xerox Corporation is launching five new multifunction products and printers, including two that feature a breakthrough in solid ink technology, which for the first time makes colour printing as affordable as black and white.

The product rollout includes the Xerox Phaser™ 8860 colour printer and Xerox Phaser 8860MFP colour multifunction printer – the first printers to feature the next generation of Xerox’s solid ink technology. Nearly five years in development, the new crayon-like ink sticks have been developed to last longer than ever before. By increasing the total number of colour pages the ink sticks produce, Xerox has reduced the price of colour printing. When comparing the cost of the device and the ink, printing on the Phaser 8860 is two times less expensive than using equivalent laser printers from other manufacturers.

“Our customers told us that they want and need high quality colour printing to support their business, but that price was a barrier,” said Ursula Burns, president of Xerox. “By focussing our research on advancements in solid ink, we can now make printing a page in colour as inexpensive as black and white.”

With Xerox’s cartridge-free solid ink technology, the ink sticks, which are dropped into the colour-coordinated ink trays, require minimal packaging and generate 90 percent less waste than comparable laser printers.

“The new Xerox cartridge-free solid inks are each only one third of the cost of the black supplies. What this means (and our tests confirmed) is that now – for perhaps the first time in the history of workgroup office colour printing – you can print almost any document in full colour on a desktop printer for the same cost as printing it in black and white,” said David R. Spencer, President of the SpencerLab Digital Colour Laboratory, which has independently tested the Phaser 8860.

Base pricing for the Phaser 8860 colour printer and Phaser 8860MFP is $2,499 and $3,999, respectively. The black ink, with a yield of 14,000 pages, is $216. Each colour ink stick, also yielding 14,000 pages, is only $72. Comparatively, the Hewlett-Packard Colour LaserJet 4700dn printer is priced at $1,599, with a supplies cost of $178.99 for a black toner cartridge that yields 11,000 pages, and $253.99 for each colour toner cartridge that yields 10,000 pages.

With print speeds as fast as 30 pages per minute in colour and black and white, a 750 MHz processor and true Adobe PostScript3, the Phaser 8860 and Phaser 8860MFP produce colour prints that are Pantone colour approved, meaning the image quality matches the tough standards of Pantone’s colour system. Automatic two-sided printing and N-up printing, which enables users to print multiple pages onto one, allowing more images to fit on a single sheet of paper. In addition to these features, industry-leading optical character recognition (OCR) software in the MFP version of the Phaser 8860 allow documents to be scanned and converted to digital format, saving users both time and money.

More Xerox technology offers more choices, more colour
Building on the industry’s broadest product portfolio that offers customers wide choices for their document needs, Xerox also launched today the Phaser 6180MFP colour multifunction printer that prints at speeds as fast as 20 pages per minute in colour and 31 ppm in black and white; and the Xerox WorkCentre™ 7232 and WorkCentre 7242 colour multifunction printers, which offer print speeds as fast as 10 ppm in colour, and 32 and 40 ppm in black and white, respectively.

The Xerox Phaser 6180MFP starts at $999, and features a 400MHz processor, 384MB of memory and a 950-sheet paper input capacity. With Xerox’s Emulsion Aggregation High Gloss Toner, true Adobe PostScript3
