Office Depot launches of nationwide Tech Recycling Service

Customers can recycle technology, cell phones, rechargeable batteries and empty ink and toner cartridges at Office Depot Stores in North America

Office Depot today announced the launch of its new “Tech Recycling Service” available at all of the company’s 1,100-plus retail store locations in North America. The Office Depot programme, which was piloted in 2006 in approximately 100 stores in the U.S., has already resulted in the recycling of more than 108,000 pounds of technology.

Through Office Depot’s Tech Recycling Service, customers will now have the ability to recycle all of their technology items at one time by following three simple steps:

Step 1: Determine how many tech products you have to recycle and purchase the appropriate sized Tech Recycling Box at an Office Depot retail store location. (Boxes are priced at $5, $10, and $15, and include all shipping and handling.)

Step 2: Fill the box with acceptable technology items ranging from monitors, small televisions and printers to keyboards,  digital cameras and cords and cables. (For a complete list, visit your local Office Depot store or go to       www.officedepot.com/techrecycling.)

Step 3: Bring the filled but unsealed Tech Recycling Box to an associate at your local Office Depot store.

So where and how is the material recycled? Office Depot told Recycler “After an Office Depot customer returns their box filled with e-waste and an Office Depot associate looks through the box to ensure that all items are eligible, Office Depot sends the Tech Recycling Box to Intechra, our recycling vendor. Intechra is one of the largest tech recyclers in the U.S. Through their service, the old technology is crushed, compacted and ultimately turned into raw materials, such as glass, plastic, copper and aluminum.”
