HP Indigo take-back scheme gets UK launch

Feb 12, 2010

Blandford-based print waste handling specialists J & G Environmental is to manage an environment-boosting print supplies ‘take back and reuse’ programme in the UK.

The company will manage a collection service for HP Indigo digital press customers. HP is offering all of its Indigo digital press users in the UK a free used components collection service which will extend the global company’s reuse and recycling programme.

The programme covers take-back of used binary ink developer parts (BIDS), empty ink cartridges, used imaging oil and bobbin wires.

The components are being collected and processed by J & G in collaboration with its parent company, Cleansing Service Group (CSG), which has advanced print waste handling facilities at its Cadishead, Manchester, treatment centre.

All the waste will be recycled as a valuable source of raw materials, but BID units together with bobbin wires will be shipped to Holland for reconditioning and reuse.

HP’s take-back programme, offered exclusively in the UK, aims to reduce the impact of HP Indigo print operations on the environment and help customers to ensure the used materials are being disposed of in an environmentally sound way.

“This scheme expands our environmental sustainability efforts to meet increased demand for waste reduction measures, and supports an industry-wide initiative in the graphic arts and photofinishing industries to reduce waste,” said HP program manager Cecile Mesmain following an inspection tour of J & G’s Blandford headquarters.

“We are glad to have J & G Environmental on board as the waste management service provider to execute our programme because the company has a long-standing history and proven track record in professional waste control in the printing industry.”

J & G general manager John Haines said the scheme was another example of how key manufacturers were showing their corporate responsibility by taking ownership of waste and working with customers to ensure its sustainable disposal.
