Jaffery Academy Kenya goes green through e-waste recycling

Mar 16, 2010

Jaffery Academy has again performed the best in Coastaltec’s Inkjet Recycling Programme. Jaffery has embraced the Going Green concept and taking up this concept is one of the ways they have contributed towards recycling.

The school has been awarded a Tree Growing Programme, sponsored by Coastaltec – a growing brand for remanufactured toner and inkjet cartridges in Kenya.

Students that took up the initiative to take part were awarded with certificates and the highest collector was Mahek Fatema who won an EPSON all in one printer, second best Tehseen Fatema earned herself a Car mp3 player and in third place was Sabiha Nazerali who won a 2 GB Flash Drive.

“Coastal Image Technologies congratulates the school and the students who took tremendous efforts towards this program; we hope they will continue with the same spirit” Fatema S Somji, Coastaltec’s Project Coordinator, told Recycler. Adding “The students this year have worked tremendously hard in collecting empty toners and inkjet cartridges”.

Jaffery students are working towards preserving the planet for their future and by collecting this type of waste (E-Waste) are reducing carbon footprint and living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

According to the current statistic, only 5% of empty printer cartridges are being recycled – that means that 95% of these items are simply discarded and end up in landfill sites which become dangerous for the environment and the air we breathe.

Fatema concluded “By throwing away your used empty ink cartridges away you are wasting money, which could be going to good causes. It takes 2-3 ounces of oil to make a new inkjet cartridge. Plastics used in printer cartridges can take over 10 decades (over 100 years) to decompose. So recycle and save the environment.”
