Beginning 22 April, Earth Day, customers can drop off old printer cartridges at any Walgreens photo counter.
As part of the initiative, the store will donate $500,000 to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
Walgreens Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications Chuck Greener said: “People want to feel good about where they shop, work or invest their money. This recycling program gives our customers a convenient way to do their part for the environment and a good cause.
“We’re proud of the great strides we’ve made toward reducing our carbon footprint and are excited about new, responsible and innovative projects we’ve planned in the near future.”
The programme also includes mobile phone recycling. Walgreens has up to 7,500 stores in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico with fiscal 2009 sales of $63 billion.
