Daily Mirror unveils new online recycling scheme with ShP

May 5, 2010

Mirrorgogreen.co.uk was set up to help readers become more environmentally responsible by recycling laptops, digital camera, sat navs and mobile phones. The Mirror is the first national newspaper to do this.

Users simply enter information about their product, such as model number and whether it’s working or not, and find out how much cash they will get for the product. MirrorGoGreen will then send them a freepost envelope in which to send the product to be recycled. A courier is sent to collect laptops.

ShP do not currently recycle printer cartridges, but plan to introduce this within the next six months.

Head of Commercial Partnerships for Mirror Group Newspapers Digital Jonathan Bury said: “This is an exciting launch for us, Mirrorgogreen.co.uk will help to push the Mirror brand forward, giving something back to readers, while also helping the environment.”

Simon Walsh, Co-Founder and Owner of ShP Limited, said: “It’s fantastic to team up with one of the UK’s leading newspapers. It’s taken a long time to develop the site to ensure its user friendly.

“This recycling service is the perfect way for gadget consumers to recycle all their old gadgets, help the environment and get cash in return. This service is helping to reduce the UK’s electronic waste and is one of the first in the country to offer multiple product trade-in.”

All phones are reused or refurbished in line with the EU WEEE Directive. The majority of handsets can be reused and are sent to developing nations where affordability on new handsets is minimal.

Lancaster-based ShP is one of Europe’s largest electronics recyclers, employing over 80 staff at two sites. It was the first to launch an online “cash for old mobiles” service in the UK with its mopay.co.uk consumer brand.
