Profit from operations rose from JPY 40 billion (£297 million) for the three months to 30 June, up from a loss of JPY 5 billion (£37 million) last year.
Income before income taxes was reported as JPY 46 billion (£342 million) compared to JPY 703 million (£5 million).
The OEM said that “efforts to enhance profitability in each business segment produced measurable results,” along with increased sales.
For the rest of the year, Kyocera “anticipates a continuation of the favourable business environment in the second quarter”. It added that there still “remains some difficulty in foreseeing demand from the third quarter onward.”
In its financial report, Kyocera stated: “[The quarter] brought a substantial improvement in the business environment as compared to the previous first quarter, with increased demand for components and successful product launches in the mobile phone business.
“Despite the appreciation of the yen to the euro, increased orders in the components business and enhanced profit in the telecommunications equipment business led to improved sales and profit in the first quarter compared to the previous fourth quarter.”
