The company urges people to send in their old mobile phones, and has pledged to donate €3 for every phone it receives to the Dutch Co-Operative Aid Organizations.
Vast regions of Pakistan have been badly flooded following unprecedented monsoon rain in July. Around one million people have been affected by the flooding, and there are looming fears of food shortage and disease.
Gerhard van Klaveren, Managing Director of Van Klaveren CCC/Eeko, explained: “The flood in Pakistan is an unprecedented disaster. Millions of people have been severely affected. Pakistan needs help.
“Our organisation attaches great importance to ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’, which is why we would like to make a contribution.
“I therefore call on everyone to send us their old used mobile phones and empty cartridges. According to estimates, there are some 15 to 20 million old mobile phones still lying around in Dutch households. This represents a valuable contribution.”
Van Klaveren urges people to send their used phones to the following address, paid for by the company:
Inzamelactie Slachtoffers overstroming Pakistan
PO box 101
The Netherlands
Phones should be sent in a sealed envelope, and should not include cases, chargers or SIM cards. The company will donate €3 for every handset it receives.
Donations will go to the Co-Operative Aid Organizations (Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties, or SHO), a group of aid organizations in the Netherlands that works to relief humanitarian disasters.
Members include the Dutch Red Cross, Oxfam Novib, and Unicef. The group has worked to help victims of major disasters including the Haitian and Indian Ocean earthquakes, and conflicts such as Iraq and Darfur.
Donated money will help pay for much needed medical services, food and drinking water distribution, and temporary shelter.
