Epson granted smartchip patent

Sep 24, 2010

The EP 1 997 641 B1 patent means that the refilling process will in effect be a new process, so that remanufacturing cannot take place. The empty cartridge will have to be shredded.

According to our sources, “all Seiko Epson cartridges must be provided with such a chip. In addition, updating the information when refurbishing such a cartridge may be considered a new production of the protected cartridge”.

The Recycler has also learned that Canon has filed two patent applications relating to the properties of an ink comprising a pigment.
