US bans large cartridges from passenger flights

Nov 9, 2010

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the ban alongside a series of new measures in a reaction to the foiled terrorist plot using explosives concealed with toner cartridges.

In the statement, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said: “Toner and ink cartridges over 16 ounces will be prohibited on passenger aircraft in both carry-on bags and checked bags on domestic and international flights in-bound to the United States. This ban will also apply to certain inbound international air cargo shipments as well.”

The ban goes even further than similar measures announced by the UK Home Office last week, which banned cartridges over 500g from passenger hand luggage, as well as unknown shippers.

Additionally, the DHS continued its ban on all air cargo from Yemen, as well as From Somalia.

All cargo deemed “high risk” will also face enhanced security checks, a measure which will also impact inbound international mail packages, which will be screen individually and certified as coming from an established postal shipper.
