UPS introduces new safety regulations following toner bomb scare

Dec 8, 2010

The company said that the move is part of an ongoing review to enhance security.

The directive takes effect as of December the 7th, and UPS stated that ‘consumers who originate and tender a shipment to any retail shipping location will be required to show a government-issued photo ID as a form of identification’.

This procedure is already in place in some UPS locations, and is being expanded to include all retail shipping locations worldwide.

This increase in security measures comes just weeks after explosives were found in a toner cartridge on a UPS cargo plane bound for Chicago. It was later discovered that the package originated from a retail location in Yemen.

This recent development in security protocol has most likely been put in place to avoid any other similar incidents during UPS’ busiest period of the year, which will see them delivering 430 million packages over the Christmas period.
