Former remanufactured cartridge-only award now awarded to original cartridges.
UL Environment, a unit of Underwriters Laboratory, announced on 9 November the revisions to the Standard for Sustainability for Printing Cartridges, which can now be applied and certified in the US to both remanufactured cartridges and original toner cartridges.
The revised standard also addresses criteria for “socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing” and includes “mandatory documentation of compliance with local, regional, and national environmental and occupational health and safety requirements, as well as proof that the manufacturer has an effective environmental management system in place”.
Steve Wenc, President of UL Environment, commented: “By republishing the EcoLogo standard for printing cartridges as a UL Environment Standard for Sustainability in the United States, manufacturers will have the opportunity to be recognized by a trusted and global leader in sustainability science and certification.
“Expanding the standard from only remanufactured cartridges to include original toner cartridges is a major step forward in helping to acknowledge advancements made by manufacturers of environmentally preferable products.”
