Lexington workshop aims to benefit those made redundant in Lexmark’s recent lay-offs.
WKYT reports that a group in Kentucky held a workshop to help those affected by Lexmark’s job cuts, following the OEM’s announcement that it would shut down its Lexington-based inkjet manufacturing business and cut 1,700 jobs by 2015.
The workshop, held by Startup Advantage, aimed to help former Lexmark employees with an interest in starting their own business after being made redundant by the OEM, and to provide an opportunity for them to network with entrepreneurs in Lexington, with the group reportedly reaching out to “more than five hundred people”.
Randall Stevens, a spokesman for Startup Advantage commented: “We want to get them out, just seeing what the entrepreneur and start up communities are doing. There’s probably a lot of people, that they aren’t even aware are here in town doing things. Some of them might have their own aspirations and ideas about doing things.”
The Recycler recently reported on Herald Leader columnist Tom Elben’s view that Lexington might benefit from the lay-offs if entrepreneur support organisations and officials find ways to convince the workers to stay in the area.
