Search engine and question sites reveal lack of awareness regarding the quality and safety of aftermarket products.
Despite efforts from a wide range of individuals and organisations including retail franchise Cartridge World and the UK Cartridge Remanufacturers Association (UKCRA), misinformation regarding the quality and security of using refilled and remanufactured cartridges are still widespread.
A discussion initiated by username DeniseTeresa revolving around the question “will using refilled toner cartridges eventually damage my Laser Samsung printer?” has proffered a number of responses stating inaccurate or misguided opinions.
One respondent operating under the pseudonym PMStern commented that while there is no inherent danger of using aftermarket products, they do move on to claim diminished quality: “No, I don’t think it will damage the printer, but having used remanufactured cartridges in the past at my job, I can say the quality is not as good and also many of the cartridges go bad early.”
Ancient_Hacker remarked that “sometimes the seals leak toner and you end up with a mess inside the printer. Unlikely that it will cause major harm, but it will need to be vacuumed out”, presenting an unlikely hypothetical situation to the question.
Other queries along a similar line have solicited similar responses, including one individual claiming to be a “computer tech” repeating the assertion that “[refilled cartridges] probably won’t harm your machine doing it occasionally, but you could damage it, ultimately”. Another use also replied to the inquiry noting that “only the ink from the people who made your printer should be used. Anything else is going to lead to poor quality printing at best”.
The degree of misinformation oft-touted as accurate is disheartening to The Recycler, and is likely to remain the case undoubtedly supported by similar claims made by OEMs including Kyocera, HP, and even telecommunications company BT.
The Recycler urges readers to engage in these discussions and help consumers discover the benefits of remanufactured products.
