Gartner forecasts larger increase in mobile device spending

tabletRevision of 2013 predictions sees overall IT spending prediction fall slightly, but mobile devices expected to be more popular than anticipated.

Mad Mobile News reports that technology research firm Gartner has revised its previous IT spending estimates for this year following “an analysis of comprehensive spending numbers for 2012”, and has announced that spending on mobile devices is expected to increase more than it previously anticipated.

While it shifted its figures for IT spending from a 4.2 percent growth estimated in January to an estimated growth of 4.1 percent, Gartner states that each major IT sector will experience spending growth over the next year, with mobile devices seeing the biggest increase.

Estimates for global device spending in 2013 have increased significantly compared to Gartner’s previous forecast, rising from a projection of 6.3 percent to 7.9 percent – a total of $718 billion (€550 billion) compared to $666 billion (€510 billion); mainly due to the increasing popularity of mobile devices as consumers “prioritise mobile device spending over other forms of IT spending”.

The article adds that while Gartner notes that the uncertain global economy will continue to have an impact on IT spending, the 4.1 percent growth forecast “is nearly double 2012’s 2.1 percent growth”, and “similar IT spending should be seen in 2014”.
