Article discusses how more can be done to combat climate change through remanufacturing.
CRR responds to the United Nations’ claims that climate change and greenhouse gases have raised the Earth’s temperature by 0.5 degrees Celsius, which is expected to increase to four degrees Celsius by the end of the century, by highlighting the environmental benefits of remanufacturing.
According to the article, remanufacturing has saved at least three million tons of carbon dioxide globally through saving energy and reducing carbon emissions, said to be the cause of global warming.
It goes on to emphasise that “more can be done to mitigate climate change” by increasing the amount of remanufacturing taking place globally, with Fernand Weiland, European Director of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA), estimating that just half of all components that have the ability to be remanufactured in Europe are actually remanufactured; leaving “plenty of opportunity for replacing numerous new components manufactured by OEMs with remanufactured products”.
According to Weiland, CO2 savings generated by automotive remanufacturing in Europe is estimated to be 300,000 tons per year, with around one million tons per year being saved by the industry globally. As automotive remanufacturing represents 30 percent of the remanufacturing industry, it was estimated that global savings of carbon dioxide currently amount to three million tons, which could “easily double, if not triple” if the industry is expanded.
