Job losses at Xerox call centre

Triangle Business Journal reports that Xerox has blamed “a change in business conditions” for the cutting of 67 jobs at one of its largest call centres for Xerox Business Services’ commercial-solutions group, with the lay-offs due to take effect in October.

Xerox took over the call centre as part of its acquisition of Affiliated Computer Services in 2010, and in 2009 was hiring for 150 staff members at the centre. A spokesperson for the company, Bill McKee, reportedly said that Xerox still employs around 1,700 people in Raleigh, as well as 1,600 people in Cary and Durham. In North Carolina as a whole, Xerox claims its total number of employees stands at 4,400.

Most of the jobs due to be axed are for customer care assistants and customer care supervisors, with a notification letter sent to the North Carolina Department of Commerce stating that the job cuts were due to the “changing strategic needs of our client”; although McKee did not name the client.

McKee added: “The facility is not closing, and we are hoping to be able to re-deploy the impacted employees into other operations we have in the Cary-Raleigh area. We have a significant number of operations in the area and will continue to maintain a presence within the community.”

Xerox has cut back on call centre staff at a number of other call centres in the US recently, including 439 staff members at its call centre in East El Paso, Texas; and the permanent closure of two call centres in Oregon, resulting in the loss of 300 jobs.
