staplesOffice supplies retailer announces sustainability achievements for the third quarter, with the company meeting its recycling and energy efficiency goals.

Staples Canada has announced that its sustainability goals for 3Q2013 have been met, with the company listing its various environmental achievements from the quarter, including the collection of 625,230 ink and toner cartridges, which its customers are able to drop off at every store in Canada to help Staples Canada reach its goal of collecting five million ink cartridges by Earth Day 2014. Alternatively, schools are able to apply for a free ink cartridge bin, with Staples collecting the cartridges free of charge.

Among the company’s other environmental achievements is the collection of 908.73 metric tons of electronics in 3Q2013 – an increase of 19.8 percent compared to 3Q2012; the stocking of 3,400 sustainable products available in-store, including Forest Stewardship Council Certified paper and products made of recycled materials; and a reduction in energy consumption of 3.66 percent.

Furthermore, Staples Canada recently partnered with Bullfrog Power to launch the bullfrogpowered Printers Program, which saw any inkjet printer at a Staples store between 25 September and 25 October coming with bullfrogpowered 100 percent clean, pollution-free electricity for one year, helping to reduce emissions by more than 225 tonnes of CO2.

Commenting on Staples’ commitment to sustainability, Pete Gibel, Vice President of Merchandising at Staples Canada and Chair of the Staples Canada Environmental Committee, said: “Our long-term commitment to growing our business in a sustainable manner and reducing our impact on the environment is a top priority for Staples. We’re thrilled that our sustainability programmes continue to grow and make a positive impact.”
