DNA India reported on the figures from Plast India Foundation, which is “the apex body of major associations, organisations, and institutions connected with plastics”. The Foundation aims to “promote the development of [the] plastics industry and to assist the growth of plastics and related materials and their products”.

The figure of 200 lakh tonnes (which equates to 20 million tonnes) is said by the Foundation to be due to “growing use of different forms of the commodity”, with Subhash Chaturvedi, Madhya Pradesh Chairman of Plast India Foundation’s National Promotion Committee, stating that in 2013 “the consumption of plastic in India was 120 lakh tonnes”, or 12 million tonnes. Chaturvedi added that the figure is expected to increase to 20 million tonnes by 2020, and that the consumption of plastic in its various different forms is “increasing by an average of 10 percent every year”.

The Recycler previously reported in May this year that HP claimed over 75 percent of its inkjet cartridges are made with recycled plastic, and reported in January 2013 that a student at college in the USA invented a machine to recycle plastics into printing material for 3D printers.
