Scoop.co.nz reported on the deal between the OEM and the printer cartridge recycler, which is expanding into e-waste recycling. For Croxley, the deal is said to be a “significant agreement”, and will see the company collect and recycle “all Ricoh e-waste nationwide”. This marks the “first such deal the business has signed”, with all e-waste collected from dealers including cartridges, computers, office equipment and mobile phones.

Croxley Recycling is a subsidiary of stationery supplier Croxley, and already provides cartridge collection and recycling in the country to Canon, Brother, Konica Minolta and Sharp, with over 14,000 collection points. These are located in businesses, schools, universities, hospitals, government departments, banks and shops, and are “free to consumers”, with cartridges accepted and processed “from all brands”.

The company noted that the deal is “a significant step” as it is seeking to relocate its recycling facility to West Auckland, adding that one of its business partners has “developed a pathway for waste toner powder to be used in the production of building material”. Croxley Recycling is also aiming to undertake “corporate rebranding and expansion into new production lines” in education, including working with Brother to “increase school awareness of ink cartridge recycling”.

David Lilburne, Managing Director of Croxley Recycling, stated: “The new premises offer significant growth opportunities in terms of process space and allow for increased capital spend. We have just purchased a new shredder, compactor and granulator. This will support our growth plans for 2016 onwards.”

Charley Peace, Ricoh’s Sustainability and Communications Champion, added: “Product stewardship is a huge part of the sales process for Ricoh and we’re proactive in the way we seek to handle all of our waste. It’s clear that the government will have to make e-waste a priority product as New Zealand has one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world, so we’re just trying to make sure we are compliant and working on the issue.

“We want to reduce our environmental impact wherever we can and Croxley has offered us a reputably strong way to continue tackling our e-waste strategically.”
