An article on the TalkBusiness website named toner and inkjet cartridges as “among the most damaging electronic waste products sent to landfill”, making up a “large proportion” of electronic waste sent to landfill.
The publication also spoke to UK cartridge retailer Toner Giant about the importance of remanufacturing cartridges, with the company saying: “With 350 million sent to landfill each year, the environmental impact of print cartridges can’t be stressed highly enough.
“By recycling your used cartridges, your company will demonstrate its commitment to responsible waste management – bolstering your green credentials and validating your overall integrity and company ethics.”
The quotes were part of a piece on the need for SMEs to consider ways to recycle waste that will avoid the toughening sanctions which could instigate “substantial monthly overhead[s]”. It mentions the monetary incentives of government recycling grants and the “costly and unwanted” landfill tax which small businesses should consider.
TalkBusiness concludes that a comprehensive recycling scheme helps businesses show their “green credentials” to the local authorities and to their customers, adding that “many companies choose to network and partner with others in a bid to gain exposure for their on-going recycling efforts, as well as saving money on the cost of waste disposal”.
