HP updates Enterprise printer security

HP announced three new enterprise class LaserJet printers that deliver increased protection against malicious attacks. The stronger security is part of a broader HP strategy to provide the deepest security across PCs and printers.

Run-time intrusion detection is another new feature, developed in collaboration with Red Balloon Security, which an in-device programme for detecting attacks. These will be standard on new HP LaserJet Enterprise and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers with PageWide technology, and can be added to LaserJet Enterprise devices released since April 2015.

The HP FutureSmart service pack update further enables the Whitelisting and Run-time intrusion detection features can be added to many existing HP LaserJet and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers launched since 2011. FutureSmart is HP firmware that helps “protect our customers’ investments in HP Enterprise printers by enabling the delivery of new capabilities via updates”.

The OEM has also provided the JetAdvantage Security Manager, the industry’s “only policy-based security compliance solution”, allowing IT to close ports, disable access protocols and auto-erase files. In addition, the Instant-On Security feature automatically checks and resets any affected settings.

HP updated the JetAdvantage Security Manager earlier this year, improving automation, including auto-discovery of devices. The new models of the LaserJet Enterprise are the M506 series, for monochrome printing with a 25 percent reduced footprint and 71 percent faster dual-sided prints than its predecessor.

Also included is the MFP M527 series, for monochrome printing, with single pass and two-sided scanning and first page out speeds up to 33 percent faster than the predecessor, and the Color MFP M577 series, which includes, single pass, two-sided scanning and 43 percent faster dial-sided prints.

The M506 series will be available from 1 October, while the M527 and M577 will be available from 2 November.
