Indian parliament goes paperless

Dec 4, 2015

Indian governmentAnnual ministry reports, committee reports and private members bills will all be uploaded to the parliament website, with MPs entitled to purchase an iPad to adapt to the changes.

Indian Express reported on the transition, which will allow politicians who wanted a printed version of reports to “have the option for some more time”, although once all the MPs (Member of Parliament) have been trained in going paperless, they will have to go digital.

Officials from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) have been working overtime to enable the digitisation. Online messaging systems are being streamlined to avoid paper slips being passed around are MPs are being given unique mail IDs too.

There are also plans for updating the wireless connecting to 4G.

The Recycler reported in October 2015 on Najib Shah, Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, who told customs commissioners that paperless trade will help reduce transaction costs, in accordance with the Digital India programme.
