At least 50 percent of the printers that ABS UK sells come with print management software, and the company now has more than 1,500 customers.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner interviewed Brett Abson, Sales Director at ABS, which turned 25 last year, explained how the business had developed from “selling black-and-white photocopiers to providing a full managed print service”.

Abson says that the transition to the paperless office has not had a negative effect on his business, but rather “there’s more paper produced now than ever before” as people like to print off their emails and other documents.

ABS UK started as a single office in Brighouse in the north of England, with a handful of staff and some 250 customers, but it now has a turnover of £4 million ($5.9 million/€5.5 million). Its product range includes “desktop printer scanners and colour photocopiers” and Abson says that anyone who spends more than £30 ($44.90/€41.40) on printing could benefit from what the business offers.

He said the company worked hard to excel during the recession: “Our objective was to save customers money. We were picking business up from companies with six desktop machines who only needed one printer.”

The enterprise’s customers range from “small office-based firms to churches, day nurseries and high schools”, and its biggest investment in the last five years has been in service, with new engineers recruited and the office-based team who respond to service calls expanded.

“We also invested in remote management software so we receive an email when there’s a problem with a machine – things that the customer used to have to do manually.”
