The OEM’s new white paper features new information for remanufacturers on how to programme their chips to avoid misrepresentation.

The white paper – Aftermarket chips for HP LaserJet printers – which you can download here, is the fourth version of the document, and notes that “for many years” the OEM’s printers have displayed either “Genuine HP Supply Installed” or “non-HP Supply Installed”, with the chip’s ID field “one method that is used to properly identify cartridges”. However, some aftermarket companies “deliberately identify themselves as ‘Genuine HP’ in order to more favourably position their products with their customers”, and HP Inc’s aim is to “inform manufacturer of aftermarket chips” of changes to chips so that “proper messaging is displayed to the end user”.

The OEM previously released a white paper to cover this, and this new white paper discusses the changes made to LaserJet printers after the new range was launched last year. This range includes the JetIntelligence technology, and HP Inc has stated that with this new technology, “additional protection was added to further validate the authenticity of Genuine HP supplies”, with two fields needed to “identify whether a supply is Genuine HP or non-HP”.

The first of these “indicates the presence of a digital signature” and the second “is the traditional manufacturer ID field from legacy products”, or the edit to the ID field on chips that was previously discussed in the first white paper. HP Inc warns that “both of these fields must indicate either an HP supply or a non-HP supply”, adding that “mismatches in this data will result in a supply memory error”, and provided a list of printers and cartridges that the changes apply to, which you can find in the document.

Industry chip manufacturer Apex Microelectronics responded to the release of the paper, discussing the “78 newly-added cartridge models” that HP Inc has released information for, including: the CF400A; CF410A; CF360A; CF287A; CE505A; CB540A; CB541A; CB542A; and CB43A. Apex noted that it “responded timely” to the requirements laid out in the white paper, and “finished the programme modification”, adding that customers “can contact Apex’s sales manager for detailed product information”.

It also commented that “Apex’s quick reaction mechanism profits from the acknowledgement of intellectual property and the prudent attitude in each patent. Apex acknowledges the huge developments made in research, development and technology by the OEMs, and will respect their intellectual property as always”.
