The Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful (KADB) recycling event includes a free collection from Cartidge World.
In an promotion to keep their area beautiful and free from unwanted electronics Albany Civic Centre are holding a recycling event so that residents can safely get rid of electrical items, printer cartridges, unwanted documents and prescription drugs, reported the Albany Herald. KADB holds an annual recycling event to promote safe disposal of items and encourage recycling, and the Columbus company is “expected to bring in two big trucks [..] to assist people with document shredding” but KADB Executive Director Judy Bowles said “We do ask that no businesses bring their documents – it is for citizens and their household documents.”
Bowles said that “drug collection is free and anonymous with no questions asked”, and that the “pill drop” is done with the assistance of Albany drug agents and is to make sure that people do not dispose of them by flushing them down the toilet, as they would not be filtered out of the water system and that
“Flushing the medications is absolutely the wrong way (to dispose of them).”
Children will be encouraged to bring soft drink bottles and milk containers and will receive a small amount of monetary reward for each one and Bowles commented that “we are doing that to get young folks on board with recycling”. The collection of electronics is free except for televisions, for which $20 (€17) is required, and a small fee is also required for cathode ray tubes and CRT monitors, but ink cartridges will be collected by Cartridge World for free, as they will be able to refill them for resale.
After 12 years of this event, 541 tonnes of electronic waste has been recycled and kept out of the landfill at Dougherty Council. Bowles said that “all of that has been recycled and made into new and usable products”.
