Whatech.com reported that the CAGR (compound annual growth rate) is set to hit $12.10 billion (€11 bilion) by 2022, and that “printed electronics is gaining a wide momentum” due to the “many benefits it offers over conventional printing” like low manufacturing cost, scalability and simple production. It added that “the printed electronics market growth [is] driven by the growth of Internet of Things and various advantages”.

The Internet of Things demands increased printed electronics, and this technology has added benefits in the form of a “thin-form factor, flexibility, stretch ability, portability, and rollability”.

The report said that “inkjet is the fastest-growing printing technology in the printed electronics market during the forecast period”, and is expected to grow and dominate the market due to the benefits of “non-contact printing, increased scalability, and potential to meet the rising market demand for customised flexible electronics solutions”.

Some of the major physiognomies of inkjet printing are its “simplicity, reproducibility, non-contact, high resolution, speed, flexibility, low amount of waste generation, and low cost”, as well as small size and less weight which is more suited to manufacturing “flexible devices like photovoltaic devices and sensors”.

The report noted that “lighting devices [are] expected to grow at the highest rate in the printed electronics market during the forecast period”, and that printed OLED technology is expanding and improving.
