Carbon Trust launches new zero waste certification

Dec 2, 2016

The organisation has created the Zero Waste to Landfill certification to “recognise companies that have successfully achieved zero waste to landfill”.carbontrust

The organisation calls itself “an independent, expert partner of leading organisations around the world, helping them contribute to and benefit from a more sustainable future through carbon reduction, resource efficiency strategies and commercialising low carbon technologies”. On its website, it noted that the Carbon Trust Standard for Zero Waste to Landfill aims to “recognised companies that have successfully achieved” zero waste to landfill.

The standard, it went on, “recognises an organisation’s achievements in reducing its environmental impact through actively diverting its non-hazardous waste streams from landfill”, doing this “typically through a combination of reducing waste, finding ways to reuse materials, increasing recycling or sending waste to energy recovery”.

Additionally, it “provides a robust framework for verifying zero waste to landfill claims”, which is “fully aligned with the methodology of the existing Carbon Trust Standard for Waste”. The trust noted that this “supports the increasing number of organisations that want independent and credible recognition of their achievements in improved waste management”.

While attaining zero waste to landfill can be a “substantial commitment for a business”, creating such a target “can produce tangible savings, both through better use of resources and a reduced landfill costs, as well as demonstrating their commitment to becoming a more sustainable company”. The trust cites ASSA ABLOY, “one of the world’s largest lock manufacturers”, as one of the “first companies to achieve the new certification”.

Charles Robinson, Sustainability Manager for the EMEA at ASSA ABLOY, commented: “Minimising and ultimately eliminating waste generation across all of our waste streams, where possible, is a real opportunity for us to greatly reduce our environmental impact. Working with the Carbon Trust was a really good chance for us to verify our zero waste to landfill achievements, with an independent and internationally recognised organisation.

“ASSA ABLOY and the Carbon Trust share the same values in fact-based transparency, which ensured the partnership was a great fit.”
