Oklahoma police arrested two people after finding alleged “stolen cheques, a printer and stolen mail”.
Fox 23 reported that if it had not been for a hotel clerk’s observance, there could have been close to 150 identity thefts, and police said that his attention to detail may have prevented this. The alleged crime took place in Tulsa after the clerk noticed that there was something not quite right with the money order used to pay for a room.
Justa Richardson and Matther Myers were arrested after the clerk noticed that the payment had been made with a “washed money order”, and he could see “the old ink under the new writing”. When police searched the suspects’ room they found “stolen cheques, a printer and stolen mail”, and they are now searching for people who may have been victims of the crime.
Richardson and Myers have been charged with five counts of “possessing forged notes or instruments and concealing stolen property and misdemeanours for defrauding an innkeeper and making a false ID”. The stolen mail had financial information that could be used and police believe that the couple were going to “commit fraud”.
The mail the pair had in their possession came from Northern Owasso, Claremore and Inola, and it is believed that they stole outgoing mail from “individual mail boxes and a blue USPS mail box”. Tulsa police asked people to come forward if they thought they had been a victim.
