Recycling programme discontinued in US

Apr 6, 2017

A community group has had to discontinue its recycling of cartridges for fundraising due to lack of space.

Hannibal Courier Post reported that the Douglass Community Services Kids in Motion (KIM) recycling programme is to cease with immediate effect, due to the lack of space and storage. The programme has been in place since 2003 in Hannibal, Missouri, and was part of the Funding Factory scheme, raising $23,713 (€22,249) as well as saving thousands of pounds of waste from going to landfills.

KIM sent over 1,100 cartridges in 2016 for recycling, saving 1,600 pounds of waste materials and offsetting CO2 emissions from the use of 1,865 gallons of fuel.

Amy Vaughn, KIM Program Director, said that she was sad to see the scheme come to an end “but unfortunately, due to space limitations in our current building, it’s just not feasible to continue.” Vaughn added that she hoped someone else would take on the fundraising programme and not only help the community but a supplementary income as well, as “the saying one man’s junk is another man’s treasure is so fitting. $23,000 over the years has been such a blessing to our kids and programmes”.
