Toner scam in Switzerland

May 3, 2017

A telephone toner scam has been hi-lighted by members of the public.

Beobachter reported that the scammers call and promise a discount on follow up orders but in fact this does not happen. The callers claim to be from ÖKW or Global-Net and say that if the customer buys a toner cartridge they will be credited with 75 francs ($75/€69) for the empty cartridge but this is not so.

The customer finds that they have to buy multipacks of toners but the costs are not on the websites and the cartridges contain chips which can track the buyer. Suggestions have been made that Swiss Recycling may be behind the calls.

Both websites are registered to Lirim Hoti whos is a business man from Basel. The article noted that Teldata registered his companies with the “lowest ranking in terms of creditworthiness”.

Hoti said: “I’m just the computer scientist who created and registered the websites for the company Sio-Media” but customers are commenting on the internet that this company is using the same scam as ÖKW and Global-Net.

As scams go it appears this one is fairly good however it was noted that there are no recycling fees on toner cartridges and that Swiss Recycling has nothing to do with the scam.
