Business and e-waste

An article discusses how businesses can adopt an e-waste strategy and the benefits it will have.

ERI Direct reported that when it comes to e-waste implementation persuading some businesses to adopt a strategy can be challenging but by following certain steps when approaching top executives this can be overcome.

The article noted that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that e- waste is the fastest growing waste and that by pointing this out to “the boss” and the importance of correct disposal which would reduce environmental impacts on landfill may just be the start of turning them around. As always education is the key and talks with leaders could get tings moving.

Ensuring that people know that the toxins released from e-waste and the hazardous chemicals such as lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic, that are released into the atmosphere or leaked into the earth can end up contaminating water is enough to start most people thinking. Also local businesses have an obligation to the community in the manner in which they dispose of waste and the effects of that on them.

The article suggested explaining about recycling as a safer option and discussing how the electronics are safely taken apart in centres that are set up for the process as well as providing jobs, the recycled materials gain a new life which saves raw materials.

There is also the question of data security when technology is disposed and the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) found that 40 percent of phones and tablets being resold contained personal files and information which is why companies should work with electronics recyclers who are qualified to destroy data on devices prior to disposing of them. The risk of sensitive data finding its way into the wrong hands should highlight the need to adopt an e-waste strategy.

Company reputation can now rest on carbon footprints and environmentally friendly practices and it has been found by Nelsen that Millennials are more committed to working with sustainable companies. By adopting an e-waste strategy the company can advertise the fact on their website and social media as well as in press releases which can attract new customers. Contacting an e-waste disposal company and asking for more information or even arranging a meeting with the team leaders or boss will initiate action but first be sure that the recycler does not send the waste to a developing country.
