Staples CEO makes Fortune list

Sep 25, 2017

Staples CEO Shira Goodman

Shira Goodman, 56, has been named one of 2017’s Most Powerful Women by Fortune magazine.

Goodman, who has worked for Staples for 25 years, became the company’s CEO last year, in the wake of Staples’ failure to purchase Office Depot. Now, despite Staples’ recent well-publicised $6.9 billion (€6 billion) acquisition by Sycamore Partners, she has managed to retain this position in a move which Fortune describes as saying “a lot about [Sycamore’s] faith in Goodman”.

Fortune relates that Shira is keen to revitalise Staples’ practices by “trying to make the company less reliant on its dwindling retail business, focussing instead on corporate clients and closing dozens of stores – efforts that will likely be easier outside of Wall Street’s klieg lights.”
