Another Staples location set to close

Oct 13, 2017

The Northampton, Mass. Staples store is due to close next month, with customers being redirected to three other locations.

MassLive reports that the branch of Staples, housed at 122 North King Street, in Northampton, Massachusetts, will be closing down on 4 November 2017. A sign put up at the location redirects consumers to three other stores, located in West Springfield, Greenfield and Hadley.

This is the most recent in a long chain of 350 store closures which have taken place over the last 5 years. 48 were shut down last year and in spring 2017 Staples revealed plans to close 70 stores this year, thereby giving up 4.5 percent of its 1, 600 branches.

Staples, a formerly public company based in Framingham, has had its financial struggles well-documented in recent months and ended up being purchased by Sycamore Partners, an investment firm, for $6.9 billion (€6 billion) in September this year.

When contacted about the closure, a spokeswoman from the chain, Meghan McCarrick, revealed via email:

“We continually evaluate our store performance to ensure we’re operating the business in the best way.  As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint.  We are committed to providing great service and every product businesses need whether it’s in-store, online or through mobile.”
