With the constant development of technological innovations such as cloud storage, printing may seem irrelevant – but a report shows it is actually still crucial to many businesses.

According to an article by IT Pro, printing “remains a vital part of many workplace IT systems”, with a Gartner report forecasting that “office devices will print almost 3 trillion pages over the course of 2017.” Additionally, “both IT and line-of-business managers are taking an increasing interest in the print solutions used within the enterprise.”

“The explosion in the use of mobile devices and thin clients in the workplace drives demand for printing wherever employees are,” Gartner said. “There is also demand for an affordable mobile printing solution that is easy to use and manage and that meets IT security requirements.

“This is being driven by the diversity of mobile platforms and printing devices, the need to ensure documents are printed seamlessly and securely without compromising network security, and the need to control and monitor who is printing and what is being printed remotely.”

The article also warns against complacency when it comes to printers, explaining that “print solutions are something that can have serious implications for your business – both positive and negative.”

Security is a major concern, particularly with the recent revelations that WiFi-enabled printers are susceptible to KRACK and Brother’s reported printer vulnerability. Networked printers “can be an easy way for hackers to get inside” corporate networks, and even the “physical security” of printers can become an issue, with the potential for important documents to be left lying in the print tray.

Businesses must also take other factors into consideration, such as print volume, compatibility, long-term contracts with printer suppliers, and total cost of ownership. The article also explores the issue of environmentally-friendly printer solutions, which are becoming increasingly widespread, and cites the benefits of the Kyocera ECOSYS range, before concluding that “the right print solution can be a serious business asset, with benefits for productivity, cost and environmental impact.”
