A new Cartridge World blog offers tips and tricks to extend your printer’s usability and avoid common problems.

According to the blog, “a few simple steps” could be all it takes to increase your printer’s longevity.

  1. Cleaning the interior

Keeping the inside of your printer clean is a vital way to extend its lifespan. Open up the printer to look for excess paper dust and other debris and gently wipe it away from the interior or use a can of compressed air to blow the dust from your printer. This should only need to be done once a month or so.

  1. Keep the manual feed tray closed when not in use

Keeping the manual feed tray closed will prevent it from being broken or knocked over.

  1. Replace cartridges before they dry up

Make sure your ink and toner cartridges are replaced before they run dry, as a dry cartridge “leads to wear and tear on your printer head.”

  1. Take care when replacing a cartridge

Cartridges need to be replaced “fairly frequently” and you must take care when doing so, paying careful heed to instruction and avoiding touching the bottom of the cartridge as you replace it, which can “reduce the quality of the print, while also negatively impacting your printer’s overall health.”

  1. Keeping your printer in standby mode

Continually switching your printer on and off can have a negative impact so it is advisable to keep it on standby mode to prevent cartridges being dried up and the header becoming clogged.

By following these simple steps, “you can drastically extend the lifespan of your printer.”
