HP to buy solar and wind energy

Nov 28, 2007

Hewlett-Packard has announced that it will pay an undisclosed sum for 80 gigawatts of renewable energy from Airtricity, a company developing and operating wind farms in Europe and North America, reports Dow Jones Newswires.

The agreement will save H-P about $40,000 and 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission over the year long contract as it moves to make 90% of its energy consumption in Ireland renewable.

Hewlett-Packard will also install a one megawatt solar electric power system and purchase a 15 year maintenance deal from SunPower Corp. in San Diego.

H-P will buy back the solar electricity via a third-party financier to eliminate upfront capital costs. The project will save the company about $750,000 in energy costs during the next 15 years, it said. H-P will also earn renewable energy credits as the installation will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than one million pounds per year.
