HP study claims original HP inks print more

Aug 17, 2009

HP recently commissioned a study by TÜV SÜD PSB to evaluate the page yield and reliability of HP branded ink cartridges compared to 14 brands of remanufactured or refilled cartridges from the Asia-Pacific region, the Business Mirror reported. The study found that original HP cartridges can print an average of 2.4 times more prints or 146.7 recent more than remanufactured and refilled ink brands.

To conduct the study, TÜV SÜD PSB used 17 HP DeskJet 5650 and 24 DeskJet 930C inkjet printers with HP 45a and HP 56a black ink cartridges and the HP 78a and HP 57a tri-colour cartridges. Additionally, HP Everyday Paper (A4) was used for all printing in this study. The 14 brands of refilled or remanufactured cartridges were sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, Hong Chong, China and Australia and were selected based on usage in the region.

When TÜV SÜD PSB tested for reliability, it was found that one in four or 25 percent of the Asia-Pacific brands of remanufactured or refilled cartridges tested were found “dead on arrival” (DOA), had substantial ink leakage, had colour mix on 10 consecutive pages or printed less than 50 pages. Additionally, some of the cartridges failed prematurely with less than 75 percent of the average yield per cartridge type and brand. HP ink cartridges tested with no reliability issues.

When tested for yield, HP cartridges produced more than one-and-a-half times or 59.8 percent of the number of prints than all the remanufactured cartridges that were tested. Additionally, they produced more than twice the number of prints or 106.6 percent than all the remanufactured and refilled cartridges that were tested.
