Fitchburg Public Library entering cartridge recycling

Dec 23, 2011

Library will receive $4 for every used cartridge donated.

The Friends of the Fitchburg Public Library has announced visitors will now be able to donate empty and used inkjet cartridges to the library for recycling, reports Sentinel and Enterprise.

The Massachusetts-based library will receive $4 (€3.06) for each cartridge recycled. A collection bin is located in the adult library near the front door, and request that cartridges be placed in individual plastic sandwich bags before placement.

The Friends of the Library implores visitors to participate in the scheme, stating “nearly 1 million inkjet cartridges are thrown into our landfills everyday […] less than 5 percent of the cartridges that are produced are recycled. It takes 1,000 years for the plastic to decompose.”

Fitchburg Public Library do not accept laser cartridges.
