Printer ink prices bemoaned

Nov 20, 2012

UK tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail is again lamenting the price of ink in comparison with Dom Perignon champagne.

The Daily Mail has reported on the price of ink, deploring over the cost drop-for-drop in comparison with Dom Perignon champagne which is cheaper by approximately £0.02 ($0.03/€0.025).

Although correctly identifying that a set of OEM cartridges will cost in the region of £45 ($72/€56) against the cost of a bottle of Dom Perignon that would set you back £109 ($173/€135), drop-for-drop printer ink is valued at £0.51 ($0.81/€0.63) per millimetre: approximately 240 percent more than the champagne at £0.15 ($0.23/€0.18) per millimetre.

The Mail also comments recent findings from product-testing charity Which? on the amount of wasted ink during the printer head cleaning process cited as using 600 percent more ink to produce 50 pages on an occasional basis in one session.

The tabloid states: “The waste is good news for manufacturers, who sell the machines relatively cheaply and then make huge profit margins on the replacement cartridges.”

The price of printer ink has been a subject of persistent consternation among certain circles, and the millimetre-by-millimetre price of printer ink has consistently fared poorly against other substances including gold, Russian cavier and human blood.
