Chicago declared green purchaser leader

chicagoOffice Depot honours Chicago for being the number one green purchaser through company’s Green Purchasing Programme.

eNews Park Forest reported that the award was given to the City of Chicago after “thousands of local governments” were evaluated in terms of “exemplary leadership in greener and sustainable office purchases” by Florida-based Office Depot.

The city joined Office Depot’s Green Purchasing Programme in 2012, emerging as the leading green purchasing local government within one year due to it “purchasing the highest percentage of green expenditures”; including recycled, remanufactured, energy-efficient and non-toxic items or items that “hold an eco-label”, with remanufactured cartridges being among such products.

Yalmaz Siddiqui, Senior Director, Environmental & Supplier Diversity Strategy at Office Depot, said: “For the past seven years, Office Depot has awarded customers for their greener purchasing behaviour, including buying recycled paper products, remanufactured cartridges, more efficient technology and green cleaning products.

“Based on our most recent analysis of thousands of customers, including hundreds of cities, we found that the City of Chicago has quickly become one of Office Depot’s greenest customers nationwide. For that reason, we are pleased to recognise Chicago’s success at our 2014 Leadership in Greener Purchasing Summit.” The summit took place on 17 September at Office Depot’s Global Headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida.

Chicago’s Mayor RahmEmanuel commented: “Chicago is a national leader in making sustainable choices and we continue to set an example for other cities around the country to follow. This honour from Office Depot is just another indication that Chicago is well on its way to becoming the greenest city in the world, and shows our commitment to pursuing sustainable behaviours that better the city as whole.”

Karen Weigert, Chicago’s Chief Sustainability Officer, added: “In Chicago, we pride ourselves on making responsible and sustainable choices that improve the quality of life in our city and set a precedent that other cities can model.”
