A number of printers “exploded” at APEC’s international media centre in Beijing, following an electrical fault.
SBS reported that “security jitters have heightened” at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit in Beijing after a series of desktop printers exploded in the administration area of APEC’s international media centre on 8 November.
The article states that the explosions “caused bedlam” in the centre, with staff told to evacuate and news crews and photographers “running to capture images” of the aftermath – you can view a video of the scene below.
The incident was reportedly caused by an electrical fault, which had triggered “a fire and the string of explosions”. Staff reacted by closing doors to the affected area and putting out the fire using “hand-held extinguishers”, with no injuries reported.
APEC is hosting its Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) on 10 and 11 November, which follows its CEO Summit held on 9 and 10 November – shortly after the printer explosions. Among attendees are US President Barack Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
