Global Voices reported that, in light of the recent conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a group of Ukrainian hackers known as Ukrainian Cyber Forces have been hacking into networked printers in Crimea and separatist-held areas in eastern Ukraine “after accessing private Wi-Fi networks”, with the leader of the group, Yevgeniy Dokukin, explaining the actions on Twitter by tweeting: “#UkrainianCyberForces have begun occupying networked printers in Donbas and in Crimea”. He also added that they “were now trying to do the same in Russian networks”.

The article notes that while the messages printed by the group via hacked printers vary, “they share a common theme”, with examples such as “greetings to Putin” and “Glory to Ukraine!” However, Ukrainian Cyber Force has also accessed a networked printer in allied country Canada and printed the messaged “Thanks for supporting Ukraine!”

In addition to hacking printers, Ukrainian Cyber Forces have “leaked web camera and security footage from Crimea, separatist-held areas of eastern Ukraine, and even government offices in Russia”, and “have been leaking videos from cameras for months”.
