Egyptian remanufacturer is planning an electronics recycling franchise in Dubai.

Recycling Today reported the new enterprise is to be called ‘Dr. WEEE’ and will begin in April 2015 with the opening of a cartridge remanufacturing and electronics recycling warehouse.

Spearink is already accredited by Egypt’s Ministry of Environment and runs a processing plant outside Cairo in the Alexandria Public Free Zone in Ameriyah. It has secured collection contracts with the Royal University of Bahrain and Orascom Telecoms. The company has also sold cartridge refilling and collections franchises in Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

CEO Essam Hashem said the franchise will be the first in the Arab region to specialise in electronics recycling. In 2012 he joined the Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment, a group which educates businesses about computer remanufacturing and recycling options.

He also said: “We started the franchise program to encourage many people in our market to enter this business. This made it easier for them, as we have the commitment to train them and to share our know-how and machinery.”

Additionally, Spearink’s current electronic recycling services do not include dismantling, shredding and classification, as European refining companies do this on their behalf. Hashem said “we hope to offer refining in the future”.
