In a press release, the online retailer, which sells remanufactured and compatible inkjet and toner cartridges, reported that the “upward trend in mobile shopping” has “caused many e-commerce business owners to rethink about the efficiency of their mobile websites”. The company redesigned its own mobile website in 2014, and aims to “focus on continual communication and consumer education” in terms of the “benefits of mobile shopping”.

It noted that “traditionally, consumers purchase their replacement printer ink and toner cartridges at office supplies stores or online stores”, and added that “recently more and more people use their smartphones to make purchases”. Other than the benefit of “saving time”, Inkjet Star spoke about six other potential benefits for consumers of mobile shopping when it comes to printer cartridges.

It first point is related to time, stating that consumers “can make purchases anytime and anywhere” with mobile shopping, saving time and energy. The company’s David Legun notes one scenario, stating that “as a college student is leaving the classroom, he thinks of the assignment that will be due in a couple of days and he remembers that the toner is low for his printer. He takes out his smartphone to purchase the replacement toner cartridge immediately.

“Because this is a repeat purchase item, he logs in to his account dashboard to find the previous order and click ‘order’. There are only two or three clicks for the whole transaction. He is satisfied upon checking the order confirmation received via email minutes later. He knows exactly when the order will be shipped to his doorstep.”

Secondly, Inkjet Star highlights mobile websites’ “ease of navigation and display”, with mobile-ready sites customised and “easy for consumers to navigate” and find the right product to buy. Third is the idea of convenience when it comes to repeat purchases, which it calls “one of the major consumer benefits for mobile shipping”, particularly with cartridges. This is because “consumers do not need to compare products or try [them] on” with printer cartridges.

Fourth is security over the internet, with many “afraid of the security issue” who have not shopped online or on a mobile. While Inkjet Star notes this is an “authentic problem”, services such as PayPal offer security, and the company itself “will not store credit card information”. Its fifth benefit is smart-purchasing, with email promotions allowing shoppers to “immediately click” through to the site to complete their purchase.

The company’s final benefit is pricing, in that smartphones are “increasingly being used to compare product prices” and “source the location of supply”. Being able to compare prices helps consumers, as they can then “purchase the best pric[ed]” cartridges.
