ink cartridgesThe German postal company will collect and recycle small electronic products, including cartridges.

Telecompaper reported on Deutsche Post’s announcement that it is now “offering an electronics return service” that will allow consumers to “recycle their old electronic devices in an environmentally-sensitive and expert way”. The products it will collect from homes cannot be larger than a “maxi” letter (353 x 300 x 50mm), or heavier than a kilogramme, and will include printer cartridges.

Other small electronics listed by Deutsche Post that it will collect include old mobile phones, “faulty or old” digital cameras, MP3 players and computer components. The decision was made to collect small electronics as “according to the electrical and electronics equipment law, electronic waste must not be disposed [of] with domestic waste but be recycled”.

For consumers looking to recycle old mobile phones, Deutsche Post asked that they “take out the SIM cards” and “delete all personal data”, with all products posted back for free with a printable “electro return” stamp on parcels or envelopes. The company added that it “guarantees that the devices will be disposed of according to legal requirements”, and will be working alongside OEM Alba Group to undertake the recycling.
