The median age of workers at the OEM, according to data from before the company split, was 39, ahead of Dell on 37 and IBM and software provider Oracle on 38.
The chart (pictured) shows a contrast between older, more established tech companies, that have a more mature workforce, and younger enterprises that have a younger median age for employees, Business Insider reported. Facebook, LinkedIn and Google have average ages of 28, 29 and 30 respectively, while Amazon and Apple both had 31.
Sitting near the middle of the chart are eBay on 32 and Adobe and Microsoft, both coming in at 33. Business Insider said the shift towards employing younger people is “having an effect” as older workers feel they “are getting left out”.
Labour lawyer Kelly Dermody, who works for Lieff Cabraser Heimann and Bernstein in San Francisco, said that “there are tonnes and tonnes of lawsuits filed for age discrimination”, and that in the past couple of years, more workers in California, home to the major technology company base Silicon Valley, are suing for alleged age discrimination than for alleged racism.
