Brother reports half-year results

brother-logoThe OEM saw revenue fall year-over-year, but saw profits grow.

The results included revenue for the half-year fall 9.2 percent to ¥310.27 billion ($3.07 billion/€2.68 billion), compared to ¥341.52 billion ($3.27 billion/€2.95 billion) last year, but operating profit actually increased year-over-year by 19.5 percent to ¥36.16 billion ($346 million/€312 million) from ¥30.26 billion ($289 million/€261 million) last year.

The results caused the OEM to adjust its prediction for revenue for the year to ¥630 billion ($6 billion/€5.4 billion), a 7.6 percent fall from last year’s revenue of ¥682.1 billion ($6.5 billion/€5.9 billion), while its prediction for operating profit fell 6.2 percent to ¥55 billion ($526 million/€476 million) from last year’s ¥58.6 billion ($561 million/€507 million).

In the quarter meanwhile, the OEM saw revenue of ¥152.74 billion ($1.46 billion/€1.32 billion), a fall from the first quarter’s revenue of ¥157.52 billion ($1.5/€1.36 billion), while operating profit also fell from ¥21.10 billion ($202 million/€182 million) to ¥15.05 billion ($144 million/€130 million). The printing and solutions segment, which includes single-function and MFP devices, saw revenue of ¥186.79 billion ($1.78 billion/€1.61 billion) for the half year, while it saw operating profit of ¥30.29 billion ($299 million/€262 million) in the half year.

In further detail, the printing and solutions unit’s sales for printers for the half year fell 9.9 percent to ¥164.79 billion ($1.57 billion/€1.42 billion), while in the quarter, the unit’s printer revenue fell from ¥83.96 billion ($804 million/€726 million) in the first quarter to ¥80.82 billion ($774 million/€699 million), and operating profit fell from ¥17.90 billion ($171 million/€154 million) to ¥12.38 billion ($118 million/€107 million) in the second quarter.
